William S Burroughs Free Jazz Quintet Concert Poster Print

Regular price £18.00 Sale

William S Burroughs, notorious author of 'Naked Lunch', toured Europe with his jazz group in the early seventies causing mayhem - and getting in trouble with the law - everywhere he went. Okay, this is all made up - but imagine what it would have been like if he'd had an avant-garde jazz sideline like this... imagine the utter, utter noise!

The text on this concert poster reads:

William S Burroughs Free Jazz Quintet, Live in Europe 1971-2. December 1971 14/London/Heathrow Airport (detained for questioning)/16/Roundhouse/17/Liverpool/  Philharmonic Hall/19/Amsterdam/Skiphol Airport (detained for questioning)/20/Paradiso. January 1972 7/West Berlin/Tegel Airport (detained for questioning)/8/Konzerthaus/9/Bonn/ Beethovenhalle/11/Venice/La Fenice (subject to structual assessment)/13/Paris/Hotel Montmartre (arrested)/17/Charles de Gaulle Airport (deported).

'…I can feel the heat closing in...' The Western Hemisphere's most subversive jazz combo bring their unmistakable brand of honking, gratuitous chaos to a Europe quivering fleshily on the verge of total economic, psychic and moral breakdown. '…This,' says Burroughs, '…is a sound you can smell.'

The William S Burroughs Free Jazz Quintet are: Burroughs (alto sax, orgone energy, surprise percussion), Benway (demoralization), Hassan (liquefaction), Hauser (piano, heat), O'Brien (other piano, further heat).

[Burroughs fans will recognise those last four names as characters from 'Naked Lunch'. Look them up... or maybe don't if you've just eaten.]
